Talk:Science Fiction Discussion Table

I don't think it's true that "unlike older SFDTs the 2005 SFDT couldn't easily pass a book from the Cordwainer Bird Library to everyone who could be expected to want to attend the next meeting within the course of a week, part of the curse of today's SWIL being substantially larger in non-membership than SWIL of the past", because I think SWIL is not substantially larger than the particular SWIL-of-the-past being referred to. The attendance for Spring '88 (http://www.swil.org/SWILnews/Spring88/attendance.txt) shows 55 people attending regularly or semiregularly (at least three meetings during the semester); isn't that around what we have now? --Jimmosk 09:57, 17 Nov 2005 (EST)

Right. It was mostly just that we didn't try to have weekly readings for people to prepare for SFDT, as that would have required more organization than anyone was up to. I don't think it really occurred to anyone to do this until too late in SFDT's life cycle, this time around. Yes, (non)membership's about what it was then -- the fact that it's been much smaller in some recent years is skewing our perception of how big it's "always been". -Jillian 11:52, 17 Nov 2005 (EST)
