I don't think it's true that "unlike older SFDTs the 2005 SFDT couldn't easily pass a book from the Cordwainer Bird Library to everyone who could be expected to want to attend the next meeting within the course of a week, part of the curse of today's SWIL being substantially larger in non-membership than SWIL of the past", because I think SWIL is not substantially larger than the particular SWIL-of-the-past being referred to. The attendance for Spring '88 (http://www.swil.org/SWILnews/Spring88/attendance.txt) shows 55 people attending regularly or semiregularly (at least three meetings during the semester); isn't that around what we have now? --Jimmosk 09:57, 17 Nov 2005 (EST)
- Right. It was mostly just that we didn't try to have weekly readings for people to prepare for SFDT, as that would have required more organization than anyone was up to. I don't think it really occurred to anyone to do this until too late in SFDT's life cycle, this time around. Yes, (non)membership's about what it was then -- the fact that it's been much smaller in some recent years is skewing our perception of how big it's "always been". -Jillian 11:52, 17 Nov 2005 (EST)
