Talk:Filking

From SWILwiki

"Filking" should redirect to "Filk", not vice versa. In most cases the shortest or simplest version of the word takes precedence.

However, this article does verge on being something that's too wide in scope to be on a local wiki, since there's already a more than adequate article on the topic at Wikipedia. Creating a page for this leads to creating a page for "Science Fiction", "Star Wars", "Role-Playing Game", "Board Game", and so on. ArthurChu 00:48, 14 Jul 2006 (EDT)

As mentioned in the article, filking in SWIL is different from filking in the regular SFnal fandom, since in regular fandom, people write their own stuff and share it, singing mostly solo with others joining in on the refrain, while in SWIL people sing other people's stuff in large groups. Anyone who's gone to both a SWIL filksing and a con open filk knows what I'm talking about.
So I guess I think this page should exist for two different sets of people. (a) people who know what filk is, but don't know how it's used in SWIL. (b) people who don't know what filk is. I'd rather define our weird terms in-wiki than redirect to an outside page that won't necessarily keep agreeing with us. -Jillian 07:16, 14 Jul 2006 (EDT)
Actually, Arthur, I think there should be a page for Science Fiction. The article would not discuss the genre in its own right (at least, not extensively), but rather it would describe the role of sci-fi in the organization SWIL (and also the social group SWIL). There's plenty to say about this that isn't mere recapitulation of other articles in the Wiki. The same goes for the other topics you mentioned (though there seems to already exist a Star Wars article). --Jonathan 12:42, 14 Jul 2006 (EDT)
