Star Wars
From SWILwiki
On Thursday of the first week of classes (or second, if classes start on Thursday), SWIL shows the Star Wars trilogy back-to-back in Science Center 101. We start at 7pm, and try to finish relatively early (meaning no long breaks between movies). It's recommended to order pizza at some point during the showing.
We've used the original version for the past two years (1998 and 1999), and the rerelease (with the new scenes) the year before that. Usually, a vote is taken in the spring about which version should be shown. When Lucas photoshopped Hayden Christensen's face into the latest rerelease in 2005, SWIL purchased VHS copies of the original editions, which should be useful for as long as VHS is.
One of the presidents needs to find a copy of whichever version has been selected. Someone in SWIL probably owns one, so ask at meeting. Don't forget this -- finding someone in SWIL who owns Star Wars is just obvious enough that it's easy to fail to do it. (Speaking from experience here, clearly.) You also need to reserve a space for the showing -- SC 101, SC 199, or LPAC cinema will all work (RIP, Kirby Lecture Hall 1937-~2001), and to post prop around campus. Encourage frosh to come.
The question has come up of what to with Episodes I-III, now that they're all out. While it's theoretically possible to show all of them in a row (either in order of release, or historical order), getting people to show up for that on a school night might be kinda tricky, but if there's sufficient interest, there's no reason not to. (Greg Robinson, inspired by a Slashdot entry, proposed a "side-to-side" showing of all six films, upon having been told that an individual who attempted viewing all six films simultaneously on split screens found it to be a sublime experience.) You'd want to either start earlier or end later. Make sure your space reservation has the appropriate times attached to it.
Now that all the Lord of the Rings movies are out, it's been suggested that SWIL should also have an annual back-to-back showing of that, possibly in the spring.
