SWILwiki:Community Portal

From SWILwiki

Welcome, again, to the SWIL wiki! If you're new, there are probably a few things you want to know. You can edit any page by clicking the "edit" tab at the top. Please note that, in order to contribute, you must first create an account. If you're new to wikis in general, or the SWIL wiki in particular, take a look at the ground rules before making any major changes. We're a pretty small community, so we do things a bit differently than you might be used to.

The user name you registered is how you will be identified site-wide. Your user page is a good place to write a short introduction so that other people (who probably know you already) can figure out who you are and learn a bit about you. When you edit an article, your user name will show up next to the record of the edit in the recent changes log. If you leave a comment on a "talk" page, you should sign your name by typing four tildes (~~~~) at the end of the comment.

Talk pages are attached to each article, and to each user page, and can be edited by clicking the "discussion" tab at the top of the page. Talk pages on articles are for discussion or disagreement about the content - user talk pages act as message boards. If you want to leave someone a message, their talk page is the best place to do this.

Ongoing Projects

A good place to start editing is the stubs category.

A hopefully-up-to-date list of current events is maintained over at Current events -- please update it to keep it that way!

Pages relating to the current calendar year may be found at this year's category page. This includes both planning pages for events this year, and the page on the current presidency.

If you're interested in documenting lore, check out the timeline on the SWIL history page, and see if anything's missing. There are lots of presidential pages linked to from there, most of which have little to no information whatsoever about the presidencies. The monster list on the Pterodactyl Hunt page links to a bunch of pages about monsters that badly need more information from people who were around when the monsters were created. Also related to the Hunt are the Hunt history pages -- skeletons exist for the 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006 Hunts, and we hope there will soon be more!

You can always check out the wanted pages list if you're bored and want to write wiki pages.

Proposed Projects

  • Pages for individual SWIL movies, with plot summaries and advice as to whether they make good SWIL movies (reasons why and why not), as well as a list of what was shown when. This would help in choosing SWIL movies, as well as allowing us to stop plagiarizing our movie voting emails from the IMDB (http://www.imdb.com).
  • Pages for individual pieces of equipment in the hunt (those not obviously subsumed by the relevant monster pages), with pictures, descriptions of how they're used, and if possible, directions for constructing.
  • A table of contents on the Main Page that actually presents a useful, logical way of approaching the vast amounts of information here.
  • Help pages! There was originally a plan to copy over help pages from meta or wikipedia, but we never did this. We still should. Either some very bored person can copy everything over manually, or some clever and inventive person can write some kind of bot to snag the pages. I suppose we could either snag them once, or every so often, depending on whether we think we'll need to customize the help pages ourselves. It's possible that since Wikipedia's running a much newer version of the MediaWiki software, we'll want to present a slightly different version of information.
  • More templates! Navigation templates for the bottoms of pages! Infobox templates for events and hunt monsters! Pretty pictures to make templates pretty! Pretty pictures to make other things pretty! (Do we need to put all the templates in a category, or will they come up naturally in a search?)

Help Pages

We haven't figured out how to import help pages from the Metawiki (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/) yet, but they've got some useful help pages (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Editing). You can hunt down any of the sysops if you have questions. Or just click the edit tab on a page and look at the markup on that page.

Logo Voting

We informally chose a logo for the wiki, which is what you see in the top left corner of this page. If you're a latecomer, though, you can still take a look at the discussion and voting over on SWILwiki:Logo.

Quotes Pages

The Recent Changes page displays a random nugget of wisdom from Quotes on each load/refresh. This is done with the invocation of Template:Quotes, using the syntax {{Quotes}}. You can add quotes to the list a quote is chosen from by adding them to the template. (If that's too tricky for you, tack them onto the end of Quotes and someone else will move them over for you!)
