SWIL Presidents
From SWILwiki
The Presidents run SWIL. To some people's surprise (and new presidents' frequent dismay), this is somewhat more complicated than sitting at the head of a room insulting the rabble and demanding to be called by whatever godlike titles they've chosen for themselves. (That's just the fun part). The Presidents' main job is to make sure SWIL doesn't forget to do things. "Things" includes running SWIL Events like the Pterodactyl Hunt, Saint Valentine's Day Massacre, Walpurgisnacht, and so on. "Things" also includes showing the weekly SWILmovies, the finals-week Schlock movies, going to RenFaire, Philcon, and whichever SF/F movies come out in theaters during the semester. It also includes mundane stuff, like making the College lets us have a Cordwainer Bird Library and a George C. Hurliman Memorial Library Memorial Library Memorial Library Memorial Library, and a board in Parrish, and stuff like that, plus helping/poking other non-members to arrange their own events. The Presidents accomplish much of this by running SWILmeeting, where they exercise their awesome powers of delegation in order to not have to do all of it themselves. They also write up the weekly "SWILnews", which is sent out by email to whoever wants it, and contains a summary of the week's official and unofficial fun events, plus whatever else happened at SWILmeeting.
SWILpresidents are the only officers for whom there is a strong procedure in place for selection. A ticket of two or three co-presidents is elected late in the fall semester, for a calendar year term of office, in an overly elaborate series of SWILmeetings. All other positions can, in theory, be simply appointed by the Presidents, and they are often forced to do this -- even so, usually there is at least a token vote held at a meeting before new positions are conferred.
Since 1996, the office has generally been held by three Co-Presidents. The only exceptions are 1999, when Cloak and Dagger served as a pair, and 2002, when three humans and a stuffed moose comprised Ruly, Kempt, Sheveled, and Couth. There's an often-repeated theory that a two-person presidency is actually more efficient, but few two-person tickets have run in the intervening time.
