Pterodactyl Hunt 2006
From SWILwiki
Note: This page is a historical record of the decisions and events involved in the 2006 Pterodactyl Hunt. It was not and should not be used in the planning of any Pterodactyl Hunt, except as a reference.
The appropriate venue for those running the Pterodactyl Hunt to plan is the hunt list, hunt (at) swil.org.
The 2006 Hunt took place on Saturday, October 7th, although it was originally scheduled for Friday, October 6th. It was run by Susan Zell, Revan Williams, and David Pupkin as the Hunt Wizards, with considerable assistance from the presidents, Finlay Logan, Jackie Werner, and Eliza Blair, as well as the Hunt Committee and the Hunt List. Megan Nelson was Head Squire.
The hunt overlapped with the SWIL 28th Reunion, more so because it was rescheduled from Friday night to Saturday due to rain.
Hunting licenses began to be sold at around nine, at which point many hunters had already left the field. Dactyl Jackie Werner fought valiantly with a broken wing before dying. Dactyl Finlay Logan was killed by a thoroughly bribed and licensed Cat (who, it should be noted, is not planning on falling for the same trick again.) The hunt ended at approximately 9:30, with the death of the third Dactyl, Mike Karcher. The Annals of Eternal Glory record the names of the victors.

Rule Set
Anecdotes and Gameplay
- Turnout was depressed by the rain postponement. Headcounts of hunters show that not much more than 100 hunters were on the field at any one time, with numbers dwindling throughout the night.
- For the first time since the institution of foam swords, there seemed to be enough swords to go around and not have long lines of hunters waiting for a sword. This was achieved by having 200 swords available for the 100 hunters.
Orientation
Monster Orientation was held at 6:30 in SC 199. The first half-hour was spent primarily putting on costumes and having meetings for Orcs, Hobgoblins, and Squires. During the second half-hour, black trash bags were handed out to all killable monsters except the Hobgoblins, who had already been issued red "biohazard" trash bags by their King. Then the Hunter Orientation Video, re-created by Finlay Logan from last year's footage, was screened.
Hunter Orientation took place at 7:30 in SC 199, with white trash bags being handed out. The video was shown again.
Layout
- Campus map (http://www.swarthmore.edu/visitordash/map_campus.html)
- Playing field: Pearson and Trotter fields (people used the in-between tree-lined area, but not the dimly-lit one by the Friends Meeting House)
- Hunt Central: Hunter Regen on the sidewalk between Trotter and Beardsley, Store on the steps just inside Trotter, Bank at a small table set up next to the staircase
- Monster Central: Table between Trotter and Pearson, just outside Pearson
- QuikStop points: Table next to Rose Garden across the field from western Pearson steps; there was also a table in the dark area in front of the Meeting House (just before the trees), but it was generally unmanned, since there weren't enough hunter swords or squires to supply three hunter regens. It's possible one of them was supposed to be a monster respawn point originally.
- Oracle: Pearson porch, with the western staircase guarded by the Black Knight and the eastern one guarded by the Sphinx
Economy
As best we can tell, these are the prices for the 2006 Pterodactyl Hunt. Struckout prices were reduced during the Hunt. We used the standard currency denominations — blue = 5, red = 3, white = 1, with basic monsters giving out 3 for an awesome kill, 2 for a standard one, and 1 for a cheap backstab.
| item | price |
| Longsword | 6 |
| Silver Dagger | |
| Hunt license | |
| Shield | 10 or 12 ** |
| Spondee bait | 8 |
* At debriefing, we decided that 50 was probably the right price for a license, and we should start there the next year, instead of setting it too high for it to be a realistic goal and then slashing it when people had already started giving up. ** This is a guess because the poster got defaced after the hunt so we couldn't read the price.
