Hunter Orientation Video
From SWILwiki
The Hunter Orientation Video was made in September of 2005 for use in the Pterodactyl Hunt that year. The goal of the project was to create a single video that will replace the small-group hunter orientation, thereby freeing the monsters who would ordinarily be doing the orienting to do other things, as well as making sure that all of the hunters are being taught the same set of rules.
Below are some photos from the first day of shooting, along with the various topics that need to be covered in the video. The working script is now located at Hunt Orientation Video Script.
1. A gang of seven beats on Mendez (Joe Monster). 2. Mai is vanquished by a trash bag. 3. Jackie is triumphant in single combat. 4. Eric gets no justice from the hunters.}}}

The Process
Filming took place on a series of afternoons in September. We rented a camera from SCCS, and borrowed tripods from the film department for two or three days at a time. Most of our filming was done outside of Kohlberg, with Andrew Brown behind the camera yelling at the stupid actors, except for the wizard shots, which were filmed in my room, with Michael Noda balancing the camera on his knees to keep it "steady". What and when we filmed was determined largely by who was available at any given time. The last things to be filmed were the dactyl sequences, which couldn't be completed until we had repaired the wings.
The script was written collaboratively on this wiki, and cleaned up by Mai Pucik. As it turned out, footage that was meant primarily to illustrate aspects of the Hunt was often filmed based on what the actors thought would be a good idea, and what looked good on camera. This resulted in a lot of good, but unscripted shots, most of which were used in the final video. The wizard segments adhered more closely to the script, but were amended due to our inability to remember lines longer than a few sentences!
All editing was done on Finlay Logan's computer, using iMovie, mostly by her. Voiceovers were done with the built-in microphone. To show the movie in SCI 101, the film was compressed into a DVD-quality format and shown directly from the computer.
The Finished Product
The final cut of the movie that was shown to hunters is available online, albeit in a very compressed incarnation. There are plans to make a DVD with both the finished movie and the unedited footage available for sale, and to donate all proceeds to the ever-hungry slush fund. Finlay's computer crashed over the summer, so the entire video was re-edited for the 2006 Hunt, and now exists as a physical DVD.
In 2006, it was determined that Monster Orientation was too different to be able to use the same video, so plans were made to try and construct a separate Monster Orientation Video with the same footage.
