The Wizards, not technically monsters at all (most of them, anyway), are arguably the most important part of the hunt, because they're responsible for running the whole thing -- choosing a location, drafting monsters, making sure enough equipment is bought/constructed, etc.

During the Hunt, they can be seen wandering about the hunt grounds in cloaks, carrying tall staffs which they use to threaten their underlings (hunter and monster alike) as they settle disputes and make sure everything runs smoothly. It is rumored that being struck by a wizard's staff can kill, or, worse yet, get you removed from the game.

In 2003 it was proposed by then-Dactyl JC Ravage '04 that all important fights, most notably attempts to kill a Dactyl, be announced to a Wizard and monitored by the Wizard to avoid claims of unfairness, especially given the dodgy nature of Super-Soaker "venom" hits. Though using then-Wizard Arthur as a referee here seemed to work well enough, later Wizards argued that enforcing this universally for all Dactyl fights would greatly slow down the game and impose on the Wizards' time, and the mechanic was dropped.

Evolution and History

The hunt was originally said to be run on the Vampire's land, but that Vampire later reformed and became the relatively unbloodthirsty Wizard of the modern hunt. There was originally only one wizard (and possibly a few other Hunt Organizers), who was only responsible for the actual refereeing of the Hunt. As the hunt expanded and the number of dactyls increased, the number of wizards increased as well. Their duties expanded as well, and their office was combined with that of the Hunt Organizer, so that today's Wizards are responsible both for the organization and running of the Pterodactyl Hunt.

The wizards have historically worn black cloaks, but in recent years (2003 onward) this has been changed in favor of nighttime visibility. In the 2004 Hunt, for instance, the Wizards were recognizable by their vivid red capes, vaguely reminiscent of certain functionaries of the Roman Catholic Church.

The Squires are the Wizards' assistants. The Cat is said to be the Wizard's familiar.
