Activities Fair
From SWILwiki
Swarthmore runs two activities fairs, one in the fall at the end of Freshman Orientation (generally the Sunday before classes start, but sometimes the Saturday after they start, etc.), and one in the Spring during Spec Weekend. Both typically involve a lot of tables set up along Parrish walk with groups sitting behind them; if it rains, these are moved either into the long, thin hallway of Parrish, or to LPAC lobby. All these sorts of logistics are handled by the Student Groups coordinators running the Activities Fair — watch your [reserved-students] email for more info, in case you need to reserve a table this year.
The point of activities fair is to recruit frosh. If SWIL's running Live Chess or some other game, there should be loud shouts of "live chess!" or other such things immediately before the game, and any frosh who come to meeting on the day of the fair should be recruited to play.
I think we talked about running Live Tic-Tac-Toe in 2005 at the Activities Fair, but I think even that failed to happen.
Also, of course, someone needs to man the table during the chess game. The table should be stocked with things representative of swillish activities -- board games, books, and old copies of BEM work well, decorative weaponry (foam or metal) doesn't hurt. If there are leftover BEMs (there are always leftover BEMs), you can put out a stack and let people take them. (Ancient BEMs work well for this, too, but will require explanation.) It's often useful to have people demonstrating things like contact juggling or fencing. As long as you're not cramped up indoors, you can get some people with swords and some person with wings to run a loud and obvious publicity stunt.
There should be a large sign or signs on the front of the table (there's currently one in George, but it may disintegrate sometime) with our name and the time and location of SWILmeetings. There should be a couple of people at the table at any time, and they should have sign-up notepads for the SWIL mailing list, and for the trip to Ren Faire. The signup notepads should ask for people's name, e-mail address, and class year (purple?), so it's easier to put them in the right place on the SWIL list. You can provide separate check boxes for the fun list and swilnews list, but then you'll need to explain what they all are. (Note that this isn't particularly useful at the Spec Weekend activities fair, though having a signup sheet is a good way to gauge interest, and all the other clubs seem to do it.)
