According to SWIL history and lore, SWIL was founded by five Swarthmore students, most of whom lived in Palmer and Pittenger at the time. The Five were:
- Jim Huang '82: Right-Handed Person, Fearless and Charismatic Leader, A Man of Few But Really Nifty Miracles
- Barbara Need '82: Lord High Executioner, Minsitra of the Treasury
- Jack Eckert: Heir Apparent
- Alice Macneal (now Carli) '82: Keeper of Keys to the Dungeon
- Scott Cowger: Undersecretary of Overstatement (or Oversecretary of Understatement?)
